Vocabulary-Literary Terms

FOR VOCABULARY WORDS, STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO

LEARN THE MEANINGS OF THE BELOW WORDS (NOT TO

SPELL THEM). EACH WEEK, STUDENTS MATCH THE CORRECT

WORD WITH THE CORRECT DEFINITION.

1. Declarative- a sentence that describes or tells

something

2. Interrogative-a sentence that asks a question.

3. Imperative-a sentence that commands a request.

4. Exclamatory- a sentence that shouts an emotion.

5. Affix- a word part, such as a prefix and suffix that is

attached to a root word to change its meaning

6.Analyze to examine something closely with the intent of

looking at the different parts and determining how they

affect or fit into the whole

7. author’s argument- an opinion in an expository text, his/her

intended meaning or theme in a work of fiction, or the main idea

set forth in a poem.

8. author’s purpose- what the author hopes to accomplish

by writing such as persuading, informing, or entertaining.

9. cause- the rationale of an event occurring in a story

10. effect- the outcome of an event occurring in a story.

Classwork

Reading/Language Arts

During the first semester, students have discussed narrative,

informational, and persuasive writing. We will combine those

skills together to focus on an author study on 4 main authors. Each

reading group will complete research on these authors and their

books. Students will also be studying adverbs.

Social Studies

Students have received information on the events that happened

immediately following the American Revolution. This begins our

next IB Unit: United we Stand Strong.

Monday

Reading-read for 20 minutes or more (record on reading in agendas

or in reading/language arts notebooks) Write at least a paragraph

summarizing or reflecting about what was read.

Spelling/Vocabulary-On the back of the students’ newsletters,

they will have a spelling and vocabulary contract. They should

choose activities from this contract and turn this in on Friday!

Language Arts/Writing-Handout on adverbs

Tuesday

Social Studies-Students will complete Chapter 9 handout (This was

given to students on Thursday, January 6
